Distance Learning

Flexible Learning, Boundless Opportunities

The Fort Smith Adult Education Center offers a Distance Education Program designed to provide flexible, self-paced learning opportunities for students. This program is ideal for those who need the convenience of online education while still benefiting from the support and resources of our Center.

Program Requirements

Before enrolling in the Distance Education Program, students must complete six hours of in-person engagement at the Center. This requirement ensures that you are fully prepared and supported as you transition to independent learning. The six hours may include:

  • Intake Procedures
  • Assessments (TABE or TABE Class E)
  • Initial Class Time

Technology

To succeed in the Distance Education Program, students must have access to:

  • A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access.
  • A personal email account that is checked regularly for communication with the Distance Education Instructor.

Regular communication with your instructor is key to staying on track, and students are expected to maintain weekly contact, either face-to-face or through email.

Enrollment

  1. Referral- You may be referred by an instructor, counselor, or the program director.
  2. Verification- Once your six hours of in-person engagement are confirmed, you'll complete the Arkansas Distance Education Intake Survey.
  3. Orientation- Within 24 hours of enrollment, you will receive a short orientation- either in person or via email- to access  your online learning account.

Admission to the Distance Education Program is at the discretion of the Fort Smith Adult Education Center Director and the Distance Education Instructor. The program is tailored to ensure that each student has the tools and support needed to succeed in their educational goals.

Program Expectations

Once enrolled, students are expected to:

  • Complete a minimum of twelve (12) hours of study on assigned programs each month.
  • Maintain weekly communication with the Distance Education Instructor.
  • Return to the Center for a post-test assessment after:
    • 30 hours of study for General Adult Education (GAE)
    • 40 hours of study for Adult Basic Education (ABE)
    • 60 hours of study for English as a Second Language (ESL)

Post-tests must be completed within fourteen (14) calendar days. If you cannot meet this deadline, arrangements must be made with the Distance Education Instructor.
