Community Diversion
Empowering Change, Breaking the Cycle
The Fort Smith Adult Education Center, in partnership with the Fort Smith District Courts, Greenwood District Court, and Harbor House, is dedicated to providing a second chance for non-violent misdemeanor offenders. Our Community Diversion Program aims to reduce repeat offenses and support individuals in their journey towards personal reform and societal reintegration.
Program Goals
- Acceptance of Responsibility and Consequences: Encouraging individuals to acknowledge their actions and understand their implications.
- Education and Reform: Providing educational opportunities and resources to support personal development and positive change.
- Prevent Future Criminal Misconduct: Equipping participants with the tools and skills necessary to avoid future offenses.
About the Program
The Community Diversion Program offers an alternative to traditional sentencing for non-violent misdemeanor offenders. Through this initiative, participants have the opportunity to engage in educational and vocational programs designed to foster personal growth and reduce the likelihood of future criminal conduct.
These options include:
- GED Preparation: Assistance in preparing for and obtaining a General Education Diploma.
- English as a Second Language (ESL): Language classes for non-native speakers to improve communication skills.
- Workforce Preparation (WAGE): Programs designed to enhance employability and job readiness.
Each participant’s program is tailored to their individual goals, education level, and work schedule.
Eligibility and Participation
Participants are selected based on screenings conducted by both Adult Education Center and Harbor House staff. If deemed suitable, individuals are invited to join the program. Approval from the court and adherence to the Accountability Contract are required.
